Paul Levine: ”Physics of the Human Body” lecture talk
Part of Janet MacLeod’s yoga workshop on
SAT 12.7. at 14.30 – 16.30 @ studio Punavuori.
To register only to this lecture, the cost is 40 €.
Physics is the study of natural phenomena. Through direct observation, a formalism is established which seeks to provide a self-consistent framework for the interpretation of human experience. As the powers of observation evolve, features are uncovered which cannot be adequately explained and thus the framework must be expanded to encompass what is, in essence, a new reality.
The methodology of Physics recognizes that this will always be the case and as such embodies an evolutionary perspective. We all possess an intuitive knowledge of basic physical principles; this enables us to survive in our world. Acquiring a basic intellectual understanding of these principles can be an effective tool for providing insight to the workings of the human body in Earth’s gravity.
The approach to Yoga practice, as realized by BKS Iyengar, demands attention to precision in the positioning the body and thus promotes a conscious evolution faithful to the 360-million-year-old legacy of life on the surface of the Earth.
“The Physics of the Human Body” seeks to develop a greater understanding of this ancient discipline, from a Western point of view, by applying Newton’s laws specifically to Yoga Asana. Connecting intuitive perception to intellect can enhance our daily practice and help us realize the true intent of the endeavor.
About the teacher:
Paul Levine (Janet’s husband) escaped academia with a Master’s degree in Physics. He spent nearly thirty-five years working professionally in Science and Engineering. Concurrent with pursuing his career Paul has studied Martial Arts and Iyengar Yoga extensively. As a Physicist he has always sought to reconcile the physical methodologies of the Eastern disciplines with those of Physics. Hence, the creation of “The Physics of the Human Body”.
